[Don't mind how wet his voice sounds or the drops falling through Martin's hands into his own.]

[ He watches Jonah’s tears fall through Martin’s hands. ]

This would have been better mercy, though. Coming somewhere nice…

I don't have any control over that.

Can you - can you keep me here now, at least?

[ The plea rattles in his spectral outline. ]

I can try. I don't know how, but. I-i can try to.

I guess - I guess that’s all I can ask for.

[ He looks up again, two blobs of brown in a head of mist. ]

[Jonah stares back into those brown blobs, holding his gaze there.]

I wish I could promise to do more.

[ Slowly, slowly, they sharpen back into eyes. The rest of Martin emerges from the fog a little. ]

No compulsions?

I- don't know that it would do anything. And I try not to do it at all if I can help it.

Right. Right. Probably … best. Elias’s hurt so much.

[ He manages to lay a blurry hand on Jonah’s cheek. ]

Right.

[He turns his face into that hand, taking a shaky breath.]

I don't want to risk hurting anyone if I can help it. Even if it means the risk of you or him disappearing from here.

[ He nods a little at that, his fingers blurring into Jonah’s cheek. ]

I … I guess that’s good.

Has this place been good to you, then?

...It has been. It's been very good.

Tell me something good about it, Jon.

The Fears aren't here. N-not anymore, they. I sort of accidentally brought them with me, but. They're gone for the most part.

[ He solidifies a little. ]

A world without the Fears. That sounds wonderful.

It is. And everyone here has been so kind. They're actually, genuinely kind.

Are you sure you’re not dead? That this is some kind of afterlife…?

...Honestly I'm not sure either. But I know he isn't dead.

[ Martin looks up, towards the bedroom. Shivering a bit. ]

So I suppose for some people this could be an afterlife, but it's not really the same for everyone.

Right. Some of us get all the luck.

[ So bitter. ]

And some of us have to be murdered for things to be fixed.

[Look he loves Martin, he hates what happened to him, but Jonah just. Knows what he's gone through himself now too.]
